About the event

INTRO TO NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY with Jeremy Likness

Learn how to master the art of nighttime photography in this hands-on two-evening workshop led by local artist and astrophotographer Jeremy Likness. You may be surprised to learn that in addition to the moon, meteors, planets, and the Milky Way, it is possible to photograph distant regions of colorful radioactive dust called “nebulae” and even galaxies with your camera!

This course will cover everything you need to know to plan, take, polish, and present beautiful pictures of nighttime targets. Jeremy will cover specific strategies for: galaxies, meteors, nebulae, the Milky Way, the moon, wide angle star fields, star trails, time-lapse planetariums, planets, and even the sun! Discover how objects are tracked in the night sky, learn how to “star hop”; to your destination, uncover tools to help with planning and aligning shots, remove the mystery around choosing the right ISO, exposure, aperture, and focal length for your shots and how to decide what is possible using an ordinary tripod and when it’s time to invest in a “star tracker.” Jeremy will also share how to create amazing Milky Way shots by “stacking” multiple photographs together, how to touch up images and ultimately the ways you might consider presenting and sharing them with others. The class includes hands-on sessions in the evening on Nye Beach, so please dress accordingly!

Bring your own camera or smartphone (yes, phone cameras are fine for this class), your passion, and your curiosity. We’ll take care of the rest!
