Starting in March, the Farmers Market kicks off for the outdoor season! The outdoor market runs from March to October, 9am - 1pm. Located at Angle Street and Highway 101. Park at the courthouse parking lot on 2nd Street. Dozens of vendors offer an array of seasonal produce, art, fresh flowers, nursery plants, jewelry, photography, hot food, fresh pastries, honey, salsas, coffee, crafts, and live music.

St. Patrick’s Day is Friday, March 17, so pack your favorite green outfit and come to the beach for the day or better yet, spend the whole weekend! We’re sure you’ll have a great time, and we’ve put together a list of some ideas for special meals, drinks, and musical performances to complement your stay. Keep your eye out and you may even spot a leprechaun or find his elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Visit Zach’s Bistro for a very special four-course St. Patrick’s Day meal on March 17th! This quaint bistro in the Nye Beach neighborhood is a popular choice for special occasions. Reservations are required, so make sure to visit their website by Monday, March 13th to view the menu and reserve your spot. Of course, Nana’s Irish Pub, also located in Nye Beach, is the star of St. Patrick’s Day in Newport! They’ll offer a limited weekend menu with all of your favorite Irish fare and features lamb pie and a wide variety of Irish beer and whiskey. St. James Gate, the most popular and exciting Irish band in the Northwest performs at 7:00 PM on March 18th. Nana’s doesn’t accept reservations, so plan to arrive early! Local favorite Szabo’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant is again hosting a special St. Patrick’s Day dinner featuring corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes, and pints of Guinness stout from 11 AM to 8 PM on March 17th! Located in the Agate Beach neighborhood, Szabo’s is taking reservations and accepts walk-ins as seating allows. Georgie’s Beachfront Grill is located next to the Hallmark Resort and not only specializes in delicious Northwest coast cuisine with an emphasis on seafood but also has an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean! Georgie’s offers a special St. Patrick’s Day dinner but hasn’t revealed it just yet. Visit their website for more information and to make reservations. Although The Anchor @ Newport Brewing Company is relatively new to the Historic Bayfront, they have established themselves as a fun place to gather, savor fine craft beers, and enjoy hearty meals! Experience their special St. Patrick’s menu with cottage pie, bangers and mash, Irish potato soup, and a variety of drink specials from Tuesday, March 13th through Saturday, March 18th. Newport’s first craft brewery, the Rogue Bayfront Public House, also located on the Historic Bayfront offers corned beef and cabbage and drink specials on St. Patrick’s Day and throughout the rest of the weekend. Spend an evening or afternoon with The Newport Symphony Orchestra featuring Hunter Noack, an internationally acclaimed pianist who grew up in Newport! The Symphony performs on the evening of Saturday, March 18 at 7:30 PM, and again the next afternoon on Sunday, March 19 at 2:00 PM at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Located in the heart of the Deco District, La Maison specializes in pastries, bread, and cakes that are the perfect start for your day, but in addition to freshly baked goods and a French-inspired breakfast menu, they are offering special dinners on February 11th and 12th. Of course, any of Newport’s beaches make for the perfect romantic beach walk, but Agate Beach includes a view of Yaquina Head to the north. Dusk is the perfect time to stroll the beach together hand-in-hand when the lighthouse’s signature signal can be seen and beautiful sunsets grace the sky to the west. Yaquina Head Lighthouse Spending time alone inside the lighthouse might be difficult because you’re not likely to be alone during regular operating hours, although it is a very romantic setting for a Valentine’s Day visit. The grounds of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area surrounding the lighthouse are also perfect to explore together and provide an amazing windswept, picturesque backdrop for you to profess your love or ask the big question. Pedestrians are welcome on either the northbound or southbound lanes on walkways that run parallel to the highway. The Mike Miller Educational Trail is a 1.2-mile hike that winds through a Douglas fir, western hemlock, and Sitka spruce forest full of local wildlife and sprinkled with numerous benches perfect for observation of the sights and sounds of the all-encompassing flora and fauna. The South Jetty Trail meanders through shore pines and sand dunes for about a mile before ending at South Jetty, affording great views of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, and offering extended hiking trails that lead down to the beach. The Yaquina Bay Estuary Trail is flat, paved, and only a mile loop, but allows for fantastic views of wetlands and amazing bird-watching opportunities as well as interpretive signs that describe local plants and animals common to the area. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is home to Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, The Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and features trails that will take you to view seals, whales, sea birds and tide pools teeming with life. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is also worth a visit; it’s Oregon’s oldest lighthouse and the only remaining wooden lighthouse with built-in living quarters. If it’s storming: If you’re a person who likes to play in the rain, we get that! But if you would like indoor activities when the weather is rough, we’ve got you covered too! The Oregon Coast Aquarium has dozens of displays and many themed exhibits. It has been the premier regional destination for exploring the mysteries of the ocean and the unique wildlife that call it home for more than 30 years. The Hatfield Marine Science Center will teach you even more about oceanography and coastal science, as it was designed and serves as a marine laboratory for Oregon State University, but also offers visitors a variety of educational programs and marine exhibits. How about venturing out in a kayak to explore the area by water? Newport has a wide range of salt and fresh waterways that are excellent for all skill levels of kayaking. If you’ve never kayaked before, lessons, rentals, and tours are readily available through Ossie’s Surf Shop and the Oregon Boating Foundation. Olalla Lake and Beaver Creek (located in Brian Booth State Park) are perfect for beginners, while the Yaquina Bay and Yaquina River are challenging for intermediate and experienced kayakers. In addition to these inland waterways, skilled kayakers can also take advantage of the miles of the Pacific coastline that run north and south from Newport, but if you’ve never been sea kayaking, we recommend that you take some lessons before going out on your own. an afternoon partially indoors: Spend the afternoon exploring Newport’s Historic Bayfront! Did you know that Newport is home to some of the absolute best whale-watching opportunities on the Oregon Coast? You can watch whales spout, breach, dive, and spy hop from the shore or from a boat out in the Pacific Ocean! Whales can be seen from Newport and the surrounding area all year round, but two weeks of the year allow for a much greater chance to see the whales, and one of those weeks is in late December! A pod of gray whales lives along the Central Pacific Coastline year-round, but an additional 25,000 of them migrate past Newport every winter and spring. From mid-December through January, the large group of whales swims down the coast from their feeding grounds around Alaska to breed in the warmer waters off Baja California, Mexico. Thousands of people travel from around the world to watch and study the whales as they pass through the area, especially during those two special weeks when the largest number of whales can be seen. The best time for winter whale watching usually happens from mid-December to Mid-January, and the Oregon State Parks Whale Watching Spoken Here® program hosts a whale watching event during that time. This year, the Winter Whale Watching event will take place from December 28, 2022, to January 1, 2023. Since 1978, Whale Watching Spoken Here® has stationed trained volunteers along the coast at 24 locations to assist locals and visitors to view the whales. They’ll be equipped with spotting scopes, field guides, and a wealth of information about whales and a variety of other local sea life.
