THE HIKER

So many places to explore!

Exploring Newport’s natural beauty by trail is a wonderful treat for your senses. Inhale the scent of salt and pine, listen for the sounds of distant waves crashing and seagulls squealing and take in the visual splendor before you. If you’re looking for a hike that takes you to higher places,  follow the trail up Communications Hill located on Yaquina Head. This short hike has enormous visual payoff with incredible, sweeping views of the coast and is a great spot to enjoy a picnic at the top. For something a little more grounded, check out Mike Miller Educational Trails in South Beach. With a wide variety of tree species and a well-maintained trail, this spot is perfect for those who want to experience and learn about our coastal forest, while still at sea level. For those hard-core, overnight hikers searching for the ultimate beach trekking experience, grab your pack, tent and sleeping bag and plan to spend a few days hiking the Newport section of the Oregon Coast Trail. This section takes you from Otter Rock through to South Beach. Finally, if you’re just looking for a casual nature stroll, Newport has plenty of paved paths at South Beach State Park or explore the Ocean to Bay Trail located near Big Creek Park. Whatever your hiking preference, Newport’s got a trail for you.
