- Love the Beach Like a Local!
Here in Newport, we take beach etiquette very seriously so that both locals and visitors can always have the very best experience in the surf and on the sand! With your help, we can ensure that our beaches remain healthy and happy places that are welcoming to everyone. Follow these simple tips to keep the beach clean, safe, and enjoyable for all, and with just a little extra effort, you can leave the beach even better than you found it. Trash Always make certain that you don’t accidentally leave any trash behind when you leave the beach. Even biodegradable refuse like food scraps and banana peels should be removed so that pets and wildlife don’t eat something that they shouldn’t. If you see other trash on the beach, please take a moment to pick it up and throw it away properly; we will all thank you! Beach Fires Please only burn wood and paper in your beach fire, and make sure that it is completely extinguished when you leave it. Use water to put out your beach fire and stir it around with a stick until only steam (not smoke) is coming from it. Don’t bury your beach fire in the sand because people and animals could unknowingly step into the hot coals underneath. If you see an abandoned or unattended beach fire, use these tips to put it out! Pets Keep all pets under control when you take them to the beach. Don’t let your pets run up to people or other pets who might not know that they are friendly and might be frightened. Please also keep your pets away from the many kinds of wildlife that call the beach their home. Wildlife There are many kinds of wildlife on the beach for you to marvel at and take pictures of, but please don’t disturb them. Don’t approach seals or sea lions, as they can become aggressive when they feel threatened. Keep your distance from the many kinds of birds on the beach, as they might be mating or nesting. Enjoy the variety of sea life in tide pools, but don’t touch starfish, anemones, crabs, or other delicate animals that live in the tide pools. If you see injured wildlife, stay away from and contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Hatfield Marine Science Center, or the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Driftwood Please don’t burn large pieces of driftwood in your beach fire because they are difficult to put out when you are ready to leave. Driftwood can also be very dangerous, so don’t stand or play on the pieces of wood as they may roll or tip easily. Seemingly sturdy driftwood can suddenly move, especially when incoming tides and waves wash underneath them. Noise Please don’t play loud music on the beach. Everyone enjoys the sounds of the waves crashing into the sand, the barking of seals and sea lions, and the cries of the seabirds that circle overhead, but loud music scares the wildlife and disturbs people who are enjoying the natural sounds of the beach. If you want to listen to music on the beach, keep the volume low or use earbuds or headphones. The beach is one of Newport’s greatest treasures. Thank you for helping to keep it clean and safe for everyone. The Newport Chamber of Commerce is always ready to welcome you to the beach! The beach is the perfect place to spend time with friends and family in the new year, and we have some great little shops to explore around town! Whether you’re in search of extraordinary artwork, specialty products, coastal-themed presents, locally sourced food and drink, or unique experiences, Newport’s distinct shopping districts have an amazing variety of one-of-a-kind options. Shop the Deco District Right in the Heart of Newport Newport’s Deco District is considered the center of town and is located along Highway 101. The district gets its name from the Art Deco architecture that dominates the area and is home to some great gift shops. Find a kite to fly on the beach at The Kite Company, browse through some cool vinyl records, cassette tapes, CDs, and related merch at Northwest Grooves, or select that missing collectable card to complete any collection at Pulling the Pros Sports Cards. The Nye Beach Neighborhood has Some Great Gift Ideas Nye Beach extends up from the beach into a charming shopping district with a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants. This neighborhood feels like a village surrounded by homes and lodging options and is also home to Newport’s Performing Arts Center and Visual Arts Center. Gift certificates to events at the Performing Arts Center or pieces or art from the Visual Arts Center or adjacent galleries make perfect presents for friends and family. Explore and Shop Newport’s Historic Bayfront Stroll and shop along Newport’s working Historic Bayfront, where beautiful murals cover the one-mile strip of canneries, fish markets, art galleries, gift shops, and various eateries that coexist amid the cries of seagulls and the savory scent of fresh cooked Dungeness crab. You’re sure to find unique gifts for yourself and others in the galleries and shops, and you can buy a variety of canned or fresh seafood or give gift certificate for food and drink at one of the many cafes and restaurants or for experiences at Mariner Square or aboard a boat on one of the Marine Discovery Tours. Find Great Treasures at Aquarium Village and South Beach Cross over the bay bridge to South Beach, where you can buy gift certificates for experiences at the Oregon Coast Aquarium or food, drinks and gifts at Rogue World Headquarters. There are also interesting shops, galleries, and even the Newport Escape Rooms to explore and shop in Aquarium Village. These nautically themed shops feel like a stage set, as they were built to look like ships at dock, tiki huts, and a pirate ship. No matter where you shop in Newport, you’re guaranteed to find a unique gift for everyone on your list or to treat yourself to something special!

- David's Chair Program Increases Accessibility in Newport!
The beach at Nye Beach in Newport is now accessible to those facing mobility challenges through the introduction of a special all-terrain mobility track chair. Newport Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with the David’s Chair program to provide this unique chair for anyone experiencing limited mobility. The chair can be borrowed during one of several time slots every Monday through Friday, free of charge at Don and Ann Davis City Park, through a simple online registration. Newport Parks and Recreation Department hopes to increase the number of days the chair can be checked out in the summer months. Newport is the most recent of seven coastal towns to receive a permanent chair from the David’s Chair program, and the organization’s goal is to eventually provide chairs at ten locations along the Oregon Coast. David’s Chair is a 501 c (3) nonprofit that allows people with mobility challenges to use track chairs and Para Golfers in multiple programs at no cost. For more information about David’s Chair or to schedule a time slot to use the new chair, please visit davidschair.org Additional access for people with limited mobility will also be available soon at Beverly Beach State Park, which is currently under construction and will be closed until spring 2024. When it reopens, the park will offer a Mobi-Mat in the summer months. The Mobi-Mat is basically a moveable strip of hard material that acts like a sidewalk and is laid down on the sand for access by wheelchair and mobility aids. The Newport Chamber of Commerce is always ready to welcome you to the beach! - Get Ready for the 2024 Seafood & Wine Festival!
Plan your winter vacation to Newport this February for the 47th Annual Newport Seafood & Wine Festival! The four-day event is the biggest party on the Oregon Coast and has been welcoming locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the much-anticipated celebration for nearly five decades. Known as “The Original and Still the Best,” the festival is one of the largest of its kind in the country and continues to evolve and expand every year. Newport Seafood & Wine festival will take place from Thursday, February 22nd - Sunday, February 25th in 2024. The event will be located in the parking lot next to the Rogue Brewery in South Beach and will feature and even larger tent this year to provide more space. Since 1977, Newport Seafood & Wine Festival has drawn revelers from near and far. So many, in fact, that in recent years the population of our small coastal town has grown from 10,000 people to well over 25,000 for the four-day event. Nearly all of the hotels, restaurants, stores, shops, galleries in town also benefit from the influx of people who choose to stay with us over the extended weekend. You’ll be able to maximize your fun at the festival with the many popular activities that people look forward to every year. Sample a wide variety of Pacific Northwest wines and locally harvested seafood while browsing booths featuring the unique work of local and regional artists and craftspeople. Chat with winemakers and chefs about their offerings and listen to great music that’s been selected to complement the atmosphere and feel of the event. Learn about and try some of the new wines that will be judged in the annual commercial and amateur wine competition. Over 150 vendors selling wine, food, and crafts will be offering their goods during the four-day festival, and more than 300 volunteers, a dedicated volunteer committee, and local support from city and county agencies make this annual event possible. The event is also “green focused” and will compost and recycle as much as possible to reduce waste from vendors and attendees. The festival is produced by the Greater Area Newport Chamber of Commerce, and Chinook Winds Casino Resort is our presenting sponsor and has generously supported the event for the past thirteen years. Wine offerings from at least 50 wineries will be available to enjoy, and bottles may be purchased throughout the event. The amount of fresh, local seafood will be expanded this year, with hearty Dungeness crab cocktails and melts, oyster shooters, grilled shrimp, sushi, chowders and bisques, as well as other delicacies from the Pacific Northwest. Baked goods, nuts and an assortment of other delicious deserts and treats will also be available. This year will feature a new juried chowder competition, where high-quality chowder entries are expected, and real chefs will attend the festival to judge the contest. A beer garden featuring ales, beer and other craft brew beverages from Rogue Brewing will also share space with the event. Additionally, the festival features the longest-running wine competition in the Northwest, open to all participating wine vendors. A panel of five distinguished wine experts judge the prestigious Commercial Wine Competition at the beginning of February, awarding bronze, silver, and gold medals, and one Best in Show award. Medal winning wines are included in the official festival guide, so event attendees can purchase them while at the event. In addition, the festival includes an Amateur Wine Competition, where amateur winemakers submit their wines for feedback and judging. The music this year will be provided by Curtis Salgado, Sonny Hess, Ty Curtis, and many more, and will match the feel of the festival. For example, Thursday is known as “locals day” and has a much more mellow feel, so the music will be more reserved as the celebration starts to warm up. The energy of the music will ramp up during Friday and Saturday, the busiest days of the event, and then return to a mellow vibe as the festival slows down and concludes on Sunday. We recommend that you purchase tickets in advance online, but tickets may also be purchased at the gate as capacity allows. Single-day ticket prices are $20 for Thursday, $26 for Friday, $32 for Saturday, and $12 for Sunday. Saturday admission is by e-ticket only, although at 1 pm the gate will open for general admission depending on capacity. Tickets can also be purchased in three- and four-day bundles. VIP tickets include access to the VIP hospitality suite for $150. Parking at the event is limited and will cost $5 per vehicle, but a free shuttle will operate an hourly loop from Pacific Shores to South Beach during the festival and will make many convenient stops around town at major area hotels. Nearby lodging is also available, but reservations fill up fast, so plan your stay as far in advance as possible. Don’t forget to bring warm clothes, raincoats, and umbrellas in case it rains. The festival is only for adults 21 and older, so make sure that you bring a valid ID. We look forward to welcoming you to the party! - The World is your Oyster in Newport!
Newport has had a close relationship with oysters since the very beginning! Yaquina Bay oysters had been harvested by Coastal Natives for thousands of years before white settlers began to move to the Oregon Coast. In fact, Oysters were one of the reasons that the settlers first came to the Yaquina Bay more than 150 years ago and have played a big part in the modern seafood economy ever since. Harvesting wild oysters in Oregon is not possible anymore because native Olympia oyster populations are now protected by law to encourage their recovery, but other kinds of oysters have been introduced to the bay are grown commercially here along with the native stock. Luckily, you can still find fresh oysters for sale just a few miles up the Yaquina River from Newport’s Historic Bayfront at Oregon Oyster Farms. Oregon Oyster Farms is the oldest oyster producer in the state and has been harvesting oysters daily since 1907. Located on the north side of panoramic Yaquina Bay estuary, Oregon Oyster Farms sell oysters on the half-shell ready to eat, bulk oysters by the dozen and oyster meat by the pint or gallon. When you visit the farm, try some of their special seasoning or homemade cocktail sauce, which is also available for purchase. Oregon Oyster Farms also offers gift certificates and can ship oysters just about anywhere in the world. 6878 Yaquina Bay Rd. (541) 265-5078
