- From Bay to Plate: Enjoy Crabbing in Newport Safely and Responsibly
Did you know that we take Dungeness crab very seriously here in Newport? In fact, we're so proud of our love for these delectable crustaceans that we've even trademarked the phrase the "Dungeness Crab Capital of the World! ® " With the largest commercial fishing fleet on the Oregon Coast, the Port of Newport has been reaping bountiful harvests of this cherished culinary delight for years. The abundance of locally caught crab means that residents and visitors alike can indulge in purchasing fresh crab straight from the docks, local fish markets, and grocery stores. If you're up for the adventure, you can even try your hand at crabbing by boat in the bay or ocean, or you can gather them right from the docks of Yaquina Bay in South Beach and the Historic Bayfront. It's essential to enjoy the bounties of Newport's coastal waters responsibly by adhering to Oregon's fishing and crab harvesting regulations. These laws are in place to ensure the sustainability of marine life and protect the delicate balance of the ocean ecosystem. Before crabbing, please familiarize yourself with laws about fishing licenses, size and quantity limits, as well as other important regulations. Let's Get Crackin'™ While there are numerous ways to savor crab, the first step is to master the art of cooking and preparing it. Here are two popular methods to choose from: Boiling: If you opt to buy crab, many places will take care of the boiling and cleaning for you. Alternatively, you can also find pre-shelled crab meat. For those who catch their own crab or purchase it uncooked, the process begins by boiling it in salt water for about 7-8 minutes per pound in a spacious pot. Enhance the flavor by adding spices such as bay leaves, peppercorns, chopped carrots, and celery. Once the crab turns a vibrant orange color, allow it to cool for 15-20 minutes, or speed up the process by immersing it in an ice bath to halt further cooking. Steaming: Steaming is another delightful way to cook crab. Place about an inch of water in a large pot and bring it to a boil. Put the crab in a steaming basket, cover the pot, and steam for about 10-15 minutes, depending on the size of the crab. Steaming preserves the natural sweetness of crab meat and is a preferred method for those who want to enjoy its delicate flavor. After cooking, cleaning the crab becomes a simpler task. Begin by placing the crab belly side up and removing the triangular apron shape beneath it. Turn the crab over, hold down one side of the legs, and gently detach the top shell. Eliminate the spongy gills and small paddle at the front, then rinse under water to eliminate any remaining dark insides or debris, being cautious not to wash away the precious meat. Finally, break the crab in half, extract the meat from the shell, and delicately crack open the legs using a cracker and a thin pick. With your crab prepared, it's time to feast! A straightforward and delightful option is dipping the meat in melted butter and savoring it on its own or alongside freshly baked bread or crackers. You can also craft flavorful crab salads like the classic Crab Louie or assemble open-faced crab and Swiss cheese melts on sourdough bread. For those craving more culinary creativity, a plethora of print and online recipes offer guidance on crafting crab cakes, dips, soups, and a medley of mouthwatering crab-infused dishes. Regardless of your chosen preparation, one thing is certain: indulging in the freshness of Dungeness crab promises an unforgettable dining experience!

- Celebrate the Fourth of July in Newport with Fireworks, Festivities, and Fun!
The Fourth of July is a time for barbecues, picnics, and, of course, fireworks. If you're looking for a memorable way to celebrate Independence Day, Newport is the place to be! With its stunning coastal scenery and vibrant community spirit, Newport offers a variety of festivities for locals and visitors alike. Here you'll find some tips on how to enjoy the Fourth of July in Newport, including the spectacular fireworks display, prime viewing spots, and additional events in nearby cities. Fireworks Extravaganza On the Fourth of July, as the sun sets, the sky above Yaquina Bay comes alive with a mesmerizing fireworks display. Enormous mortar rounds are launched over the bay, creating a breathtaking spectacle that can be seen from all over town and the surrounding area. The vibrant bursts of color and the resounding booms fill the air, creating an atmosphere of excitement and awe. Create memorable experiences with your friends and family as you enjoy a Fourth of July like no other. Prime Viewing Spots To make the most of the fireworks show, finding the perfect viewing spot is key. Thankfully, Newport offers several fantastic locations where you can watch and hear the fireworks. Since the fireworks show happens over Yaquina Bay, there are many locations from which to enjoy the show. Here are some of the best spots to settle in with friends and family: Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site: This picturesque park, nestled on the shores of Yaquina Bay, provides a scenic backdrop for the fireworks. Find a cozy spot on the grassy areas or along the trail down by the bay and prepare to be amazed. Under the Yaquina Bay Bridge: For a unique perspective, head beneath the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Here, you can watch the fireworks illuminate the sky against the striking architectural backdrop of the bridge. SW Bay Blvd.: This waterfront area offers ample space for spectators to spread out and enjoy unobstructed views of the fireworks. Set up your chairs and blankets and prepare to be dazzled. Abbey St. Pier: Located on the Bayfront, Abbey St. Pier provides an excellent vantage point to witness the fireworks bursting over the bay. Arrive early to secure your spot on this popular pier. The Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina: If you prefer a more elevated view, consider booking a room at The Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina. From your balcony, you can savor the fireworks while enjoying the comfort and convenience of a waterfront hotel. Keep in mind, because of the openness of Yaquina Bay and the size and scope of the fireworks show, there are many other great viewing areas all along the Bay. This truly does make Newport one of the best places on the coast to enjoy the Fourth of July. As always, please be safe and respectful to everyone enjoying the festivities! Additional Local Festivities While Newport's fireworks may be the highlight of your Fourth of July celebrations, neighboring cities also offer exciting events for a full day of festivities: Waldport: Enjoy a lively fireworks show on July 3rd after the sun sets along Alsea Bay. Yachats: On July 4th, embrace the holiday at the La De Da Parade, featuring whimsical, people-powered fun. Starting at noon, the parade winds along Ocean View Drive, offering a fun and lively experience for participants and spectators alike. In the evening, head to the State Park lawn at the west end of 2nd Street or find a cozy spot along Ocean View Drive to enjoy the dazzling fireworks display as it lights up the sky above the mouth of the Yachats River. Tips for a Great Experience Arrive Early: Prime spots for viewing the fireworks can fill up quickly, so plan to arrive early and enjoy the afternoon in Newport. Bring a picnic, enjoy the local shops and eateries, and soak up the festive atmosphere. Bring Essentials: Pack chairs, blankets, and perhaps a jacket, as the coastal evenings can get cool. Don’t forget snacks and beverages to keep everyone happy while waiting for the show to start. Safety First: Follow local guidelines for fireworks safety. Keep a safe distance from where fireworks are being set and be mindful of your surroundings. The Fourth of July in Newport is a memorable experience filled with dazzling fireworks, a stunning coastal atmosphere, and a warm community spirit. Visit the coast early to explore Newport and neighboring cities for additional festivities, then find a prime viewing spot near Yaquina Bay to enjoy the show. Make your plans now to gather with loved ones, and get ready to create lasting memories this Independence Day!
- Disc Golf in Newport
Whether you’re new to the world of disc golf or consider yourself an expert, Newport has two popular disc golf courses that can accommodate everyone’s experience level. Both are located in South Beach and offer an abundance of wild, natural beauty. For disc golf novices, South Beach State Park’s Twisted Pines is a great place to learn. It has an open layout with multiple tee pads ranging in skill level. (If you were wondering, a tee pad is an area where players make their first throw for a hole.) This 18-hole course is surrounded by shore pines and dunes with a long and short basket for each hole, offering various ways to play your game. There are no fees or permits required, but Oregon State Parks rules apply. If you’re looking to get lost in the woods, check out the Wilder Disc Golf Course . Located just off Highway 101 near Oregon Coast Community College, this option is perfect for seasoned disc golfers. Full of twists, turns, bushy areas and narrow fairways, Wilder offers an exciting challenge amid an enchanted coastal forest. The holes can be difficult, so more experienced players fare better here, and it is not uncommon to lose a disc. Wilder, like Twisted Pines, is also free; however, since it is set on private property, you must get a permit before you play. To obtain one, email the course’s property management for more information. Once you’ve finished your game (and hopefully achieved your 10,000 daily steps), you’ll most likely be in need of sustenance. Wilder is right next door to Wolf Tree Brewery, or, if you’re coming from Twisted Pines, it’s only a minute or two by car. You can also head to the Rogue Brewery , also just minutes from both courses and enjoy stunning views of the bayfront and Yaquina Bridge. Are you inspired to get outside and, as they say, “huck some plastic”? Then pack your disc golf bag and come play in Newport!

- Newport's Guide to Responsible Beach Enjoyment
Here in Newport, we take beach etiquette very seriously so that both locals and visitors can always have the very best experience in the surf and on the sand! With your help, we can ensure that our beaches remain healthy and happy places that are welcoming to everyone. Follow these simple tips to keep the beach clean, safe, and enjoyable for all, and with just a little extra effort, you can leave the beach even better than you found it. Trash Always make certain that you don’t accidentally leave any trash behind when you leave the beach. Even biodegradable refuse like food scraps and banana peels should be removed so that pets and wildlife don’t eat something that they shouldn’t. If you see other trash on the beach, please take a moment to pick it up and throw it away properly. Beach Fires Please only burn wood and paper in your beach fire, and make sure that it is completely extinguished when you leave it. Use water to put out your beach fire and stir it around with a stick until only steam (not smoke) is coming from it. Don’t bury your beach fire in the sand because people and animals could unknowingly step into the hot coals underneath. If you see an abandoned or unattended beach fire, use these tips to put it out! Pets Keep all pets under control when you take them to the beach. Don’t let your pets run up to people or other pets who might not know that they are friendly and might be frightened. Please also keep your pets away from the many kinds of wildlife that call the beach their home. Wildlife There may be many kinds of wildlife on the beach for you to marvel at and take pictures of, but please don’t disturb them. Don’t approach seals or sea lions, as they can become aggressive when they feel threatened. Keep your distance from the many kinds of birds on the beach, as they might be mating or nesting. Enjoy the variety of sea life in tide pools, but don’t touch starfish, anemones, crabs, or other delicate animals that live in the tide pools. If you see injured wildlife, stay away from and contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Hatfield Marine Science Center, or the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Driftwood Please don’t burn large pieces of driftwood in your beach fire because they are difficult to put out when you are ready to leave. Driftwood can also be very dangerous, so don’t stand or play on the pieces of wood as they may roll or tip easily. Seemingly sturdy driftwood can suddenly move, especially when incoming tides and waves wash underneath them. Noise Please don’t play loud music on the beach. Everyone enjoys the sounds of the waves crashing into the sand, the barking of seals and sea lions, and the cries of the seabirds that circle overhead, but loud music scares the wildlife and disturbs people who are enjoying the natural sounds of the beach. If you want to listen to music on the beach, keep the volume low or use earbuds or headphones. The beach is one of Newport’s greatest treasures. Thank you for helping to keep it clean and safe for everyone. The Newport Chamber of Commerce is always ready to welcome you to the beach! Visit newportchamber.org for a detailed calendar of events and a list of local businesses that will take care of every aspect of your stay.
