- Let’s Go Camping in Newport!
Late summer and early autumn are the perfect time of year to camp in Newport! Whether tent camping or staying in your RV or travel trailer, we have some great sites to set up your home away from home. The weather is still warm and pleasant this time of year and many of our regular visitors have returned home after the busy summer season, so there are more available spots for you to choose from. South Beach State Park (5580 SW Coast Highway) South Beach State Park begins just to the southwest of the Yaquina Bay Bridge and the South Jetty and stretches several miles south along the Oregon coast. In addition to the beach, the park also provides paved trails that are perfect for walking, jogging, and bike riding, and even has equestrian paths to ride a horse to the beach. The Campground is open year-round and offers 227 electrical sites with water, 60 tent sites, 27 yurts, 3 group tent areas, flush toilets and showers, an RV dump station, firewood for sale, and 5 campsites and 27 yurts that are accessible to campers with disabilities. Near the campground area, South Beach State Park offers a playground area, horseshoe pits, an 18-hole disk golf course, and places for fishing, crabbing, boating, surfing, and beach combing. Beverly Beach State Park (Closed for Improvements until May 2024) Port of Newport RV Park & Marina (2120 SE Marine Science Dr.) The Port of Newport operates two great RV parks in South Beach at the edge of Yaquina Bay. Both parks are within easy walking and biking distance from the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Aquarium Village, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, South Beach State Park, and the world-famous Rogue Brewery and Distillery. The RV parks are open year-round and offer 144 RV sites with full hookups, cable TV, limited Wi-Fi access, RV dump station, flush toilets, showers, and laundry facilities. The Parks are close to a store, places for fishing and crabbing, a boat launch, and fish cleaning station. Pacific Shores Motor Coach Resort (6225 N Coast Highway) Pacific Shores is the premier motor coach resort in the Newport area, offering secure private sites next to the ocean. Situated just to the north of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Area, many sites have amazing views of the ocean and of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. In addition to extensive amenities, Pacific Shores has a trail to and from miles of sandy beach. The motor coach resort is open year-round and offers 100 RV sites (Limited to Class A and C motor coaches, 25-foot minimum) with full hookups with sewer, cable TV, and Wi-Fi access, two heated swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs, workout facility, basketball and pickleball court, club house (with fireplace, billiard table and big screen TV), store, dog runs, and laundry facilities. Whaler’s Rest RV Campground (50 SE 123rd St.) Although Whaler’s Rest is a Thousand Trails membership park, all non-members are also welcome. The amenities at Whaler’s Rest are so numerous that there isn’t even room to list them all here. The park is located in the woods near the community of Seal Rock, and forested walking trails run through it and down to the beach. Seasonal trailer and RV storage is also available. The Campground is open year-round and offers 164 RV Sites with full hookups, cable TV, and Wi-Fi access, RV dump station, tennis court, club house/lounge, horseshoes, shuffleboard, mini-golf, indoor and outdoor pool, spa, hot tub, playground, showers, laundry facilities and many more amenities and activities. Sawyer’s Landing (4098 Yaquina Bay Rd.) Sawyer’s Landing is the perfect spot for fishing and bay crabbing, and its rural setting is tranquil, quiet and full of wildlife. Sawyers Landing is across the street from the Mad Dog Tavern and biking distance from the Oregon Oyster Farm and Newport’s Historic Bayfront. The park is open year-round and offers 53 RV sites with full electrical hookups (some with sewer), cable TV, Wi-Fi access, store, boat launch, and boat and crabbing and gear rentals. - Celebrate the Arrival of the New Sea Lion Docks in Newport!
Did you know that some of Newport’s most boisterous residents have a brand-new place to hang out below the Historic Bayfront? That’s right! New docks are in place for the sea lions as they return to Yaquina Bay! If you’ve spent any amount of time on Newport’s Historic Bayfront, chances are that you’ve seen, and most certainly heard the local sea lions. Male California sea lions call the bay their home for eleven months of the year, and they love to bask and roll about on the docks just below Clearwater Restaurant and Port Dock One. Every July, the sea lions migrate to the Channel Islands in California to mate with the female sea lions who stay there year-round. The familiar docks for the sea lions were destroyed in a severe winter storm that battered the bay in December 2022, and the animals had been unable to entertain visitors and locals alike at their usual spot for the remainder of the winter and spring. Luckily, the Newport Sea Lion Docks Foundations quickly raised over $79,000 from more than 200 donors to rebuild and replace the docks in time for the arrival of the sea lions this August. A celebration of the installation of the new docks and the return of the sea lions this planned for August 25th at 4 pm. Additionally, a beautiful new billboard has been placed at the entrance of Port Dock One to welcome guests. You can visit the sea lions for free, any time of the year when they are there. For celebration updates and more information, please visit newportsealions.com. The Newport Chamber of Commerce is always ready to welcome you to the beach! - Furry Friends Welcome: A Pet Lover's Guide to Newport
Newport is a haven for pet lovers, and luckily, our beautiful beaches provide a perfect playground for your furry companions! With many pet-friendly lodging options available, you'll find it easy to plan a getaway that includes your four-legged family members. However, before you pack your bags and head to the coast, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both pets and fellow beachgoers. Accommodation and Dining When planning your stay in Newport, be sure to choose from the variety of lodging options that are pet friendly. Many hotels and rentals warmly welcome pets, but it's a good idea to inquire about their policies and any pet-related fees when making your reservation. Additionally, if you're hoping to dine with your pet by your side, you'll be pleased to know that several restaurants in Newport have pet-friendly patios and outdoor seating areas. However, remember to double-check with each establishment beforehand to ensure they welcome your furry friend. Beach Adventures with Your Pets Most pets have a blast at the beach, frolicking in the sand and surf. To make the most of your beach outing and ensure a positive experience for all, here are some essential tips to follow: Leash and Commands: Keep your pets on a leash and ensure they respond well to commands. This prevents them from running off and ensures a safe and enjoyable time for everyone. Respect for Wildlife: Pets should not chase or disturb sea life, birds, or seals. It's important to maintain a respectful distance from other animals and people on the beach as well. Caution in the Water: While pets may be eager to dive into the waves, be cautious not to let them venture too far. Sneaker waves and rip tides can pose risks, so keep your pet within your control. Watch What They Eat: Prevent your pets from eating dead sea life found on the sand, as some marine creatures can be poisonous and cause health issues. Clean Up After Your Pets: Always clean up after your pets and dispose of waste properly in designated trash bins before leaving the beach. Newport's pet-friendly beaches offer a wonderful opportunity for you and your furry companions to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf together. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and respectful beach experience for everyone. So, bring along your pets, cherish the moments shared amidst the coastal beauty, and create lasting memories in Newport's welcoming atmosphere. - Navigate Newport's Tides and Enjoy the Beach to the Fullest
When you come to Newport, you'll want to find the best time to explore tide pools, beachcomb rocks, and shells, dig for clams, or simply enjoy the largest beach possible for strolling, lounging, and kite flying. A tide table (available in print from many local businesses or from a variety of websites online) is a uniform chart of tide heights that tells you when high and low tides occur. Reading and understanding a tide table is easy and will best help you plan to maximize your time on the beach. You probably know that tides are big waves that move through oceans at predictable times and are controlled by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. The Oregon coast usually experiences two high tides and two low tides throughout the day. The difference between high and low tide is known as the tidal range and can differ from barely noticeable to great distances of many feet. A tide table shows the local time for high and low tides and the height of those tides in a specific area. Start by picking up a paper tide table booklet or looking up tide tables from a reputable source online like NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) . Tide tables are set up like a calendar, so look up the dates that you’ll be at the beach. Another popular option is Tides Chart. You can find Newport's specific page here: https://www.tideschart.com/United-States/Oregon/Lincoln-County/Newport/ Next, find the times when the tides are the lowest; tides are listed in feet either above or below sea level, with the tidal height followed by an H for high tides and an L for low tides. Now you’re ready to plan your next visit to the beach, with the most beach available, for all of your fun activities! The Newport Chamber of Commerce is always ready to welcome you to the beach! Visit newportchamber.org for a detailed calendar of events and a list of local businesses that will take care of every aspect of your stay.
