  • Beach Safety in Oregon

Newport is full of adventure, from sandy beaches to rocky headlands. But the same ocean that makes this place special can also be unpredictable. A little caution goes a long way in keeping your day memorable for the right reasons. Follow these safety tips and you can explore without a change of clothes or a trip to the hospital. Beach Safety in Newport, Oregon Seas the Day…Safely Newport is full of adventure, from sandy beaches to rocky headlands. But the same ocean that makes this place special can also be unpredictable. A little caution goes a long way in keeping your day memorable for the right reasons. Follow these safety tips and you can explore without a change of clothes or a trip to the hospital. Top Beach Safety Tips WATCH FOR SNEAKER WAVES Even on calm days, places like Nye Beach, Agate Beach, and South Beach can see powerful sneaker waves. Always keep an eye on the ocean, these sudden waves can knock adults off their feet and sweep kids or pets into the surf. RESPECT THE JETTY Newport’s Southwest Jetty is popular for fishing and photos, but waves here can be unpredictable. Stay on paved paths or observation areas, and never climb out onto the rocks. LEAVE NO TRACE Leave rocks, shells, and animals where you found them. Carry out any trash so the tidepools stay healthy for wildlife and future visitors. CHECK THE TIDES Tides shape every activity on the coast. Whether you’re tidepooling, clamming, or crabbing in Yaquina Bay, make sure you know the tide schedule. Low tides reveal treasures, but rising water can cut off access fast. STEER CLEAR OF DRIFTWOOD Drift logs at South Beach and Agate Beach may look like playgrounds, but they’re slippery and can roll unexpectedly with the tide. Admire them from a distance rather than using them as a balance beam. KEEP KIDS IN SIGHT Currents and soft sand can make Newport’s beaches tricky. Always supervise children and keep pets leashed, especially near the waterline.
